Connecting the Dots at C.C. Wells: A Green Vegetable Garden

June 11, 2018

This project is an extension of an ongoing environmental education program at the school. The specific focus of it is to revitalize the school?s raised bed educational gardens to incorporate a new pollinator?s garden. The Ecology Club at the school is in charge of maintaining the gardens and promoting recycling in the community. Since its creation, the after school club has made the vegetable garden into an instructional activity for the entire school with 4th graders providing instruction to respective 1st grade buddies. The overarching goal of the project is to increase environmental and sustainability literacy while reducing environmental impact. The Fall and Spring Gardens included a diverse range of fruits and vegetables. On the pollination side, the goal is to learn about the role and importance of pollinators like bees, birds, and other insects.

More impact of project

The school wanted to promote the use of native plants that are planted with organic soil and without the use of pesticides. Those involved in the project have helped increase environmental awareness and stewardship. The overall goal of this is to help students learn more about the importance of being environmentally responsible while gardening. They’ve also increased education on the significance of pollinators and the threats towards them. It is also hoped that students will learn, through further research, about the benefits of eating healthy foods.
