Finney Elementary School Garden

September 15, 2019

Finney Elementary School needs help to complete construction of our school garden. Once the garden build is complete, our school can begin various programs. We will develop a garden club which our after-school program students will participate in as a volunteer service club. Our garden will have a lunch composting program to teach students about the importance of compost and waste. We will have various organic fruits and vegetables; a pollinator garden to teach the students about important pollinators including bees, butterflies, and birds; a touch and smell herb garden; various flowers; a recycle program; various art elements made from up-cycled materials; a musical sculpture that our music students can play music on; among many other elements. Our goal is to provide access to healthy foods for our students and their families; to teach our students and their families about growing and eating those healthy foods; and to learn sustainability, environmental awareness, and provide hands on engagement and learning environments for all grade-level science programs. Finney garden has a beautiful and unique space that borders the Otay Valley Regional Park. On a clear day, students can see San Diego Bay, downtown San Diego, and the Coronodo Bay Bridge from the garden. Finney Elementary school is a Title 1 school in a low income area. We are seeking help for donated materials and services to complete the design and landscape of our garden space. Our goal is to have a space for families and students to enjoy and learn. We hope to have a space with drought tolerant and native plants, walking paths around our raised planter beds, and more.
