Our garden area is going to be starting a composting area, where we will begin composting our cafeteria food waste. The students will receive classroom lessons on composting, recycling and a speaker will come from our City Waste Management Department. I realized that it is one thing to tell the students what goes on during the process of composting, but it would mean so much more if the could see it day by day with their own eyes. They would be able to see what happens, journal about it and use math skills to measure food waste and soil layers used in the process. Each classroom will have two different windowsill portable viewing boxes and they will be able to see how long different items takes to decompose. They will be able to compare and contrast. One box has three compartments so the could put a price of fruit, a veggie and a plastic toy to observe. Then when they work out in the garden and we introduce worms, they will also be able to view the worms in their window boxes. The understanding of the composting should be much more clear than if they are just told what happens,.
