Help Us Dig It! Creating an outdoor learning lab at Providence Middle School

My students have identified an area of our school grounds, secured the necessary permissions, and have made connections with local garden clubs and cooperative extension members to help get this project done. We have the space and the willingness, and plan to use our Green Apple Day of Service for students in the entire school and community members alike to come to Providence and Help Us Dig It!

A garden space is not just a place for growing, but will be an outdoor classroom for all grades and subject levels to use, providing more access to green space in my urban school environment. The physical work of building the garden combined with the critical thinking and application of ideas is a winning combination that will help foster life long learning. Our school garden will be a place where academic concepts are applied in real life and a beautiful nature space in which to learn. Donated seeds are in our hands and waiting to be planted.

Pollinator education will be provided by the Virginia Cooperative Extension though out the day. Students will be painting kindess rocks to decorate our garden and school yard. Please join us, and help us get to the next step by providing the elbow grease we need to get the garden up and running!
